Special Statement
Statement as of 4:08 PM AKDT on September 01, 2015

...Glacier dammed lake on the snow river which flows into Kenai Lake is releasing...

The snow Glacier dammed lake has released. Water levels on the snow river are cresting Tuesday afternoon and will begin falling overnight and into Wednesday. Water levels on Kenai Lake are rising and are expected to crest early Wednesday at a stage of roughly 10.75 feet...which is below action stage. Smaller rises are expected on the Kenai River toward the end of this week. No flooding is expected.

A Glacier dammed lake release is a naturally occurring process. In the headwaters of the snow river the snow Glacier impounds a lake. Over time precipitation and melting glacial ice cause the lake level to rise. When the lake is sufficiently filled...it causes a small part of the Glacier to lift...thus draining the lake. The snow Glacier dammed lake typically drains every other fall.

Forecast estimates of peak stage and timing will be updated on the Alaska-Pacific river forecast center website: aprfc.Arh.NOAA.Gov.
