In 1935, Prairie Dog creek running towards the northeast from Colby
reached a considerable height beyond Rexford, and isolated Oberlin
and other towns in the neighborhood.

In 2011, two tornadoes developed during the evening hours north of Benkelman, Nebraska, and a third developed north of McCook. Fortunately, all three tornadoes remained over open fields and were rated EF0 on the Enhanced Fujita damage scale.
