Weather Underground Forecast for Tuesday, November 24, 2009.
Two main weather features will bring active weather to the US on Tuesday. A low pressure system over the Central US will strengthen as it continues tracking eastward throughout the day. Ahead of the system, warm and moist air will push in from the Gulf of Mexico, while cold and dry air will pour in behind this system. This will create a strong cold front that will extend from the Upper Midwest, down the Mississippi River Valley, and wrap back westward into the Southern Plains. This front is expected to kick up light and scattered showers throughout the day, with up to a half of an inch likely in the Upper and Mid-Mississippi River Valleys, with less than a tenth of an inch over the Lower Mississippi. Snow over the Central Plains will diminish as dry air moves in. Expect the North to see highs in the mid-40s, while the Southern Plains will remain in the 60s. Also expect strong winds behind this front with gusts reaching up to 25-30 mph.
Meanwhile, in the East, the incoming trough from the Central US will push in overcast skies with a chance of light sprinkles over the East Coast. The main concern will be fog and its effects on visibility. The Mid-Atlantic states will see another dreary day with highs in the 60s, while the Northeast may see some lingering showers Tuesday morning.
Out West, a low pressure trough over British Colombia will push a cold front over the Northern Rockies and Pacific Northwest. This will continue kicking up scattered showers, with snow at higher elevations. Expect up to 3 inches of snow, with only light rainfall. Strong winds will also accompany this front with gusts up to 60 mph in northern Montana. Expect chilly conditions to persist, while California starts to see a warming trend on Tuesday.
Temperatures in the Lower 48 states Monday ranged from a low of 1 degrees at Daniel, Wyo. to a high of 88 degrees at Miami, Fla.

QuikSCAT, 1999 - 2009: R.I.P.
Posted: 9:34 AM EST on November 24, 2009
The QuikSCAT satellite is no more. The sad new of QuikSCAT's demise came yesterday in a terse message from NASA:
Several hours ago, shortly past 7:00Z today (23Nov), telemetry received from QuikSCAT indicates that the antenna rotation rate has dropped to zero and remains at zero. The motor remains powered. The system can be operated safe

Did you know that...
The Union Army during the Civil War had mother nature to thank for some of its victories. For instance, on this date in 1863, the "Battle above the Clouds" was won by the Union Army after clouds shrouded the top of Lookout Mountain in Tennessee and prevented Confederate lookouts from seeing Union troops.
