Coastal Georgetown

Public Information Statement
Statement as of 4:55 am EDT on May 21, 2012

... National safe boating week may 19th through may 25th...
... The safe boating topic of the day is thunderstorm safety...

Thunderstorms can be a boaters worse nightmare... they quickly create
dangerous winds and waves... shifting winds... lightning... downpours
and waterspouts.

If you are caught in a lightning storm at sea... .stay inside the
boat and avoid touching metal or electrical devices. If your boat
does not have a cabin... stay as low as you can in the boat.

Mariners should consult the latest radar trends when thunderstorms
are forecast. It is recommended that you do not head out to sea if
thunderstorms are likely.

Special marine warnings are issued when a thunderstorm affecting the
coastal waters is expected to produce winds of 34 knots or greater.
