GREEN

I remember collecting empty soda bottles to take to the store to trade in.
I even remember getting milk delivered to our house.
As kids, we always walked to school, ball practice, cheerleading practice & more often than not to our friends homes (and it was up hill both ways- LOL).
My mother was too busy to be a full time taxi driver... so we walked.
Laundry --I loved the smell of clothes just brought in from the clothesline, still love that fresh smell; it's so much better than the smell of fabric softening sheets.

Times were simple, families still had family time with out a date book... and kids were kids!

I don't know who the author is...
but so much of is true.

GREEN
In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to her and explained, “We didn’t have the green thing back in my Day.”

That’s right, they didn’t have the green thing in her day. Back then, they returned their milk bottles, Coke bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, using the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But they didn’t have the green thing back her day.

In her day, they walked up stairs, because they didn’t have an escalator in every store and office building. They walked to the grocery store and didn’t climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time they had to go two blocks. But she’s right. They didn’t have the green thing in her day.

Back then, they washed the baby’s diapers because they didn’t have the throw-away kind. They dried clothes on a line, not in an energy gobbling machine burning up 220 volts – wind and solar power really did dry the clothes. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that old lady is right, they didn’t have the green thing back in her day.

Back then, they had one TV, or radio, in the house – not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a pizza dish, not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen, they blended and stirred by hand because they didn’t have electric machines to do everything for you. When they packaged a fragile item To send in the mail, they used wadded up newspaper to cushion it, not styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, they didn’t fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. They used a push mower that ran on human power. They exercised by working so they didn’t need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she’s right, they didn’t have the green thing back then.

They drank from a fountain when they were thirsty, instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time they had a drink of water. They refilled pens with ink, instead of buying a new pen, and they replaced the razor blades in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But they didn’t have the green thing back then.

Back then, people took the streetcar and kids rode their bikes to school or rode the school bus, instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service. They had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And they didn’t need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 2,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest pizza joint. But they didn't have the green thing back then!

Beachfoxx ~ Good to see you stirring about. I know that so many here have gone to facebook, but I just can't bring myself to do it, for entirely personal and probably crazy reasons.

BUT - glad to see you here. I have a feeling we're going to have a year of it. There have been just too many extremes, and the lowering water and increasing temps around here are creating plenty of fuel for whatever wants to start stirring.

I confess I'm ready to take rain with a number - and even a name - to break this drought. But as they say - be careful what you wish for!

Anyhow, good to see you. Hope business is picking up for you, even though the outlook generally isn't sounding terrific. On we go!

Shore --

Good to see you too... I enjoy FB, mainly because I have some control on who is there & who sees it.
But it still ain't WU!

As I reflect on the years past here on WU I realize just how many wonderful people I've come to know, the friends that I appreciate so much! Who would have ever thought a Weather Site could bring so many friends together???
Again, as I reflect and look backwards at my years on WU I ask myself, "will the newer blog members EVER create the kind of bonds some of us older members have developed"?
Many of us, those who still refer to ourselves as WUBA's (shhhhh, don't want to stir up trouble) and those we've met after WUBA became taboo have forged friendships that will endure many more Cane seasons, many more storms and more many "stirrings of the pot". (LOL)
WU has given us a neighborhood of characters & many of us have grown to love our quirky and not so quirky neighbors... The friendships have progressed, WU has grown - but we will always connect here, the storms dictate it & we obey!

Regarding your "feelings", I'm going to politely choose to ignore those "feelings"... we here on the north side of the GOM really could use a break. Last year BP gave a new meaning to austerity as the oil washed ashore just as our prime season kicked in... many may never fully recover from the economic devastation. BP, the oil spill, dispersants, the "unknown" and the news media really "put the hurt" on us... I've survived the Canes, and I will survive the hurt BP caused, but in all honesty - the Canes were much easier on the heart & the soul. We KNOW how to deal with that kind of destruction, but we still don't know nor do we understand fully the damage from the BP Spill. I for one can say that I'd rather not see a Cane knocking on my shoreline... not this year. We just don't need another season that is washed out.
But I will do a Rain Dance with you! We are so dry that we've got Dust Devils dancing in the wind & if someone drops a match you may smell the smoke in TX!

Good to see you... its the season, we'll be seeing more of one another - that's for sure!

Heya Buddy ;o)

Been so long since I've been here, I can't remember how to navigate heh

I really appreciate and agree with your post. The term "green" used to stand for something noble, something that should've been a goal for everyone. I feel like lately, the term has been perverted into a political [expletive] that is used to shoar up various causes that have little to do with doing the right thing, with conservation and sensible usage and sustainability and recyling.

Thus,I have regressed to the barter system. There reaches a breakpoint where the energy expended to acquire income to purchase goods becomes inversely disproportionate to the energy required to manufacture, acquire or grow your own goods.

Would you like to trade for some virgin coconut oil or homemade coconut flour? :D

OMG -- Sooooooo very good to see you! Funny thing, I almost picked up the phone and dialed your number on Opening Day of HCane season!
Miss you so much!
How's da' Bride?
Please tell K, hello.

Green - it made sense "back then". Recycle the bottles, hang your clothes on the line to dry, etc.... Now we have a big plastic bin, which we toss our "recyclable plastic" into, they haul it off in a smelly diesel guzzling big truck & spend a small fortune "recycling" the plastic bottles into some other plastic nonsense!
I loved my Coca Cola in a bottle! I can remember my mother had a special place on the carport where she had an old wooden Coca Cola Crate - that's where our empty bottles went. When the case was full - whe loaded it up, traded them empties for the "return value" and filled up that same crate. We had that same crate for years & years.....

Ahhh, Crab - YOU just made my day, er, night better & it's been an almost perfect day -- so you really put a big smile on my face! So GOOD to see you!

I sure hope BeachFoxx appreciates this... I wonder if she has any idea how hard it is to turn a storm on such short notice to give her a TS/TD :(

I might have added a bit to much Brothers pepperoni to this one... the strength could be questionable... if it gets a number..it shouldn't be a big one.. no more then 2 or 3

P.S. Did anyone else want something???

ESCAMBIA COUNTY - Sand dollars and star fish are washing ashore from the Santa Rosa Sound in unusually high numbers.

The largest concentration is about a mile west of the Fort Pickens gate.

It's a bit of an unusual sight on the Gulf Island National Seashore here on the sound side. Take a look over here, there's about a hundred yard stretch of beach that is covered with thousands of little tiny sand dollars and star fish. Tourists tell us they want to take some home as souvenirs, but scientists want to know why so many of these are washing ashore now.

Tori Barnes lives in Milton and was thrilled by what she found here Tuesday.

Tori Barnes/Lives In Milton said, "We found a lot of cool stuff. We found these sand dollars and some of them have this green stuff on them like this one, and some of them are white and some of them are big."

And she wasn't alone.
*Everyone strolling the sound side was here for one reason to take home a bag filled with sand dollars most smaller than the size of a quarter.

Madeline Boyd/12 Year Old Visiting from Georgia said, "Because they're cool, and normally I only find one. I've never found so many. It's very interesting."

Kim Boyd/Mother said, "It's something you don't see unless you swim out, but yeah, you never see them up on the shore like that. It's a rare find."

Local scientists including Gulf Breeze Marine Biologist Heather Reed are concerned.

While some are quick to blame last year's oil spill, Reed says its not unusual to see a large number of these wash ashore naturally.

But Reed says there is reason to be concerned.

Heather Reed/Marine Biologist said, "We're worried about oxygen depletion in the bay, we get pockets of oxygen depletion and that's usually the sign of a fish die off."

Tori Barnes says she hopes scientists can figure out why so many of these sand dollars have washed up.

Tori Barnes said, "Because I was just wondering, like, all these sand dollars are dying and if they all die, they're not going to be any more of them."

Bill Pearson/Reporting said, "As visitors walk home with a hundreds of these little souvenirs, scientists tell us they're going to continue to look and figure out why so many of these are washing ashore.

Community mourns Teutenberg family: 'When I got the news it was just disbelief'

NICEVILLE — The instructions hanging on the Discovery Learning Academy door were simple: “Breathe, Breathe, Cry, Breathe.”

Tears filled the eyes of workers and parents at the child care center as they absorbed the news that owner Terresa Teutenberg and her family had been killed in a plane crash Saturday.

“People we don’t know are stopping by to see how we’re doing, bringing us food and just giving us hugs,” said director Jennifer Langston, as her eyes swelled with tears. “(Terresa) was like a sister to me. The Discovery family is very sad and stricken by the loss. We encourage people to stop by, lend a hand or just check things out.”

The Teutenbergs were returning from a family reunion in St. Louis, Mo., when their plane lost its right engine. The plane crashed in Demopolis, Ala., during an emergency landing.

"Flying is an inherent risk, but Fred was a good pilot,” said family friend Joe Fagundes III, who had stopped by the child care center Monday morning to offer support. “He had just been at a family reunion and was trying to get home, so he could play bass in the church band Sunday morning.

"Everything he was doing that day was something he loved."

Killed in the crash were Fred, 42, Terresa, 38, and five of their children – 2-year-old Emma, 4-year-old Peyton, 6-year-old Ellie, 9-year-old Brendon and 10-year-old Will.

The close-knit family was heavily involved in the community and their loss is being felt across the Emerald Coast.

"When I got the news, it was just disbelief,” Fagundes said, as he sat in a rocking chair inside the center. “Then I went into crisis management mode.”

Terresa’s oldest daughter, 16-year-old Ashlei Bruewer, was not on the plane. A former Ruckel Middle School student, Bruewer now attends high school in Missouri.

The teenager, who lives with her father, was planning to visit Niceville next week.

“Every single one of the kids (was) bright and always laughing,” Bruewer said in a written statement to the Daily News. “My mom was always smiling and extremely caring. (My step-dad) was a great dad and was always helping people in any way he could.”

Marantha Harvath, a teacher at Discovery Learning Academy, had taught 2-year-old Emma for more than a year and was still in shock at the news.

“You’re not supposed to have a favorite, but she was it,” Harvath said, wiping tears from her red eyes. “She was the one I would want to take home.”

Harvath was surrounded by children early Monday when a young boy walked up to her and asked, “Is Miss Terresa in heaven now?”

“Yes, yes she is,” Harvath said, smiling. “That’s exactly where she is.”

Hiya Spathy,

My rain lillies still have never bloomed. : ( I just don't understand it! They have little green shoots, look healthy, but no blooms! We've had at least 10inches of rain in the past 2 days, probably more since my rain gauge filled up although I emptied it yesterday morning! Maybe the lilies will rejoice & pop out some blooms after being so well fed! : )

West - B would have had one heck of a welcoming committee waiting for them... The Boggy Boys & other locals came out ready to prevent them from getting too close the the mourners.

Hope all is well with you.
