In my last entry I wrote about our chances for snow this Thanksgiving week. As the days draw closer and computer models come in to better agreement, it looks like we actually could see some snow Thanksgiving night.
The low pressure systems that will move through our area are slower than expected last week, so instead of snow tonight, we could actually see some snow on the ground for Black Friday shopping.
The Setup The low pressure affecting our area tonight and tomorrow will move northeast out of the Missouri Valley and in to the Great Lakes Region. As it moves out, a spinoff low will develop over Minnesota and begin moving southeast toward our area. As it does, a deep trough will build over the eastern US. This should bring enough cool air for a slight chance of a mix on Thanksgiving Day.
NAM model showing a low and trough moving over our area Thursday afternoon
As the low moves off to the east of Ohio overnight Thursday, wrap around mositure should interact with cold air filtered in on the backside. This will give us our best chance of snow.
Chances? I'm still not holding out much hope of any accumulation. A lot has to fall perfectly in to place just to see a dusting on the grass. There needs to be enough moisture left over after the low moves east, and temps need to drop low enough and long enough.
Lately I've noticed if lows are projected to be in the low-30's, they'll actually land closer to the mid-30's. So I'm guessing lows may be closer to 34 instead of 32 Thursday night. That doesn't mean we won't see snow, because upper level temps should be cold enough to support it. This just means accumulation seems unlikely.
I say more of a 40% chance we at least see some flurries over night, and maybe a 5% chance of snow accumulating on the grass.

It's only the middle of November, but many already wonder when our first snow will hit here in Central Ohio. Last year the first real chance of snow came at the end of November, but we actually didn't get any snow until December 7th. The way this fall started with below normal temps, it seemed like only a matter of time before the white stuff was falling.First chanceIt appears next week, Thanksgiving week, will bring our first chance of the season. Over the past wee...

This morning we're sandwiched between two storm systems here in Central Ohio. A weak cold front to the west with strong high pressure building in behind it, and Tropical Depression Ida over Alabama. With Ida moving north currently, and eventually east, you'd think we would at least see some rain.NopeThis morning's regional radarThe front to the north and west of us will dry out as high pressure builds behind and forces the front and TD Ida out to sea. So for today a...

Last week I talked about an early week tropical system that may interact with a cold front moving across the middle of the country. I also mentioned it may bring us heavy rains by mid week.Well, that won't happen. The tropical system did develop, but it appears the timing between the front and the hurricane won't bring us any rain at all. Hurrican Ida will probably make landfall late tonight as tropical storm on the Florida panhandle. At the same time, a weak, dry co...

This WeekWe're in a cool, weak active pattern this week with the Jet Stream staying north, but dipping south over the Great Lakes region:Jet for the week of November 2ndTwo noticeable dips this week are this evening with a weak, moisture starved cold front. Then again Wednesday evening with an enhanced wave sweeping through the Great Lakes. There's a very slight chance that Thursday morning we may see flurries right before daybreak, but I really doubt it. The first ...
