Hi from the Oregon Coast

Daily Stuff 5-29-12 Oak-Apple Day
Posted by: CoastalAnja, 4:43 PM GMT on May 29, 2012 +0
Hi, folks!

There’s brilliant sunshine out there. The leaves of the alder look metallic. There’s just enough wind to stir the leaves and once in a while a zephyr blows through to will stir a branch. It’s in the mid-50’s, which looks like good garden weather.

I haven’t seen any birds this morning, but last night, just after we got home in the dusk, a hummingbird spent quite a while by the feeder. I had the study window open and you could hear him, since it was so quiet outside, sounding like a bumblebee on steroids….

One thing I’ve been missing this spring, since we’re doing so little driving, are the wild rhododendrons. One of the bright spots yesterday was driving along 101 and seeing the masses of pink in little spots or in masses. The one curve south of Seal Rock on the ocean side of the read is most of a mile of one rhody after another.

Sheesh… what a day, yesterday! Note to self: do not allow me to run out of anti-virals *ever* again! If you read yesterday’s incredibly late newsletter you know what happened. I’m better, not a lot… but itching. So far I haven’t clawed myself bloody, but please, all of you, *go* *get* *the* *chicken pox* *shot*! This is awful….

Once I got to the shop pretty much the whole day was spent with customers and jewelry while they were there, setting up some orders to go out in the next few days and then class in the evening.

We finished Lesson 4.

…and then I went home and itched some more…..

I’m hoping to get into the garden today…anything to distract my hands.

I also have to set up an order for some of the amulets where we’ve run down the stock over the winter. I put the full list together, yesterday, and I’ll be ordering those each week for a while. When one of my suppliers ran a special last fall I stocked in the whole line and that board is getting really empty, despite my re-ordering regularly.

I also am going to spend some time with the book lists to see what’s new that I should be stocking. .

Doesn’t that pasta/tomato salad in the Magicks section sound good? I’m going to ask Tempus to pick up some of the ingredients. I hadn’t been reminded of this one since this time last year. …and I’ve added mozzarella balls to it, especially the fresh ones are delicious and make it into a light main dish. If you add greens to it, putting it on a bed of various garden greens it can make a whole dinner! I’ve taken this one to barbeques and I’m seriously thinking about making some for the 3rd July Fireworks Cookout.

The shop is closed on Tuesday/Wednesday, although the car may be there, since Tempus is going to be running around down there. Spring hours, 11am-7pm, Thursday through Monday. If we’re supposed to be closed, but it looks like we’re there, try the door. If it’s open, the shop’s open!

Love & Light,
Anja

Bright Arcturus shines southeast of the zenith after dark. Vega, equally bright, shines less high in the east-northeast.
A third of the way from Arcturus to Vega, look for dim Corona Borealis, the Northern Crown, with its one modestly bright star, Alphecca. Two thirds of the way from Arcturus to Vega is the dim Keystone of Hercules.
Uranus (magnitude 5.9, at the Pisces-Cetus border) is very low in the east just before the first light of dawn.

Celtic tree month Huath Hawthorn May 13 - Jun 9 - I am fair among flowers - Color: Purple - Class: Peasant - Letter: H - Meaning: Being held back for a period of time - Hawthorn - Like willows, hawthorns have many species in Europe, and they are not always easy to tell apart. All are thorny shrubs in the Rose family (Rosaceae), and most have whitish or pinkish flowers. The common hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna Jacq.) and midland hawthorn (Crataegus laevigata (Poiret) DC.) are both widespread. They are common in abandoned fields and along the edges of forests. Both are cultivated in North America, as are several native and Asiatic hawthorns. Curtis Clark

Tomato & Leek Soup w/Basil Cream Hearts Delicious Living Magazine --
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
1 medium leek
1 32-ounce can of organic, peeled Roma tomatoes
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 tablespoon butter, optional
2 ounces heavy cream or evaporated skim milk
1 ounce sweet basil, washed and dried
Salt
1. Slice leek in half lengthwise and chop into 1/2-inch pieces. Soak in water to clean.
2. Transfer wet leek to a stainless steel pot. Heat on low until leek "sweats" and becomes tender. Add tomatoes and simmer 10 minutes. Place vegetables in a blender and puree until smooth. Stir in butter. Add sugar and salt to taste. Be careful when blending the hot soup use a kitchen towel to hold the lid down.
3. Heat cream, pour into blender and add basil. Puree until smooth and season to taste with salt.
4. To serve, ladle soup into bowls. Spoon one tablespoon of basil cream onto the center of each bowl of soup. Run a straw or a chopstick through the center of the dollop to create a heart shape. Be creative make hearts in as many sizes as you'd like. Serve immediately.
Note: Using evaporated skim milk and no butter reduces fat grams to 1.3 only 5 percent of calories from fat.

Silliness – GCF: You Stink!

It was a particularly tough football game, and nerves were on edge. The home team had been the victim of three or four close calls, and they were now trailing the visitors by a touchdown and a field goal. When the official called yet another close one in the visitor's favor, the home quarterback blew his top.

"How many times can you do this to us in a single game?" he screamed. "You were wrong on the out-of-bounds call, you were wrong on that last holding call, and you failed to say anything about a late hit in the first quarter."

The official just stared. The quarterback seethed, but he tried to suppress language that might get him tossed out of the game. "What it comes down to," he bellowed, "is that YOU STINK!"

The official stared a few more seconds. Then he bent down, picked up the ball, paced off 15 yards, and put the ball down. He turned to face the steaming quarterback.

"And how do I smell from here?" he asked.
