Just off IH-35 going to Georgetown, Texas is a cheesy billboard with bad graphics of prehistoric animals. It has an equally unappealing name; Inner Space Cavern. Of course we had to check this out.

This is a gem of a small limestone cave found while the highway department was core drilling samples back in 1963. When they broke into a hollow pocket an adventurous/crazy highway worker decided to ride the drill bit forty feet down into the unknown. That was when they discovered what is now called Inner Space Cavern.

This is a limestone cave so it has lots of neat formations. Stalactites hang from the ceiling. Stalagmites grow up from the floor. These have been formed by water slowly seeping through the limestone over a few thousand years.

Sure there is lots of science behind these formations and geological pockets but sometimes it's more fun to just look, wonder and let your imagination decide how this happened.

Here are some tiny bats. They were near the entrance and about the size of my thumb

Texas State Capitol

Had a great mini-vacation exploring the Austin area.
We went to a cave in George Town and then on to the State Capitol.

The Texas State Capitol was designed in Italian Renaissance Style of local granite. Construction started in 1882 and was completed in 1888 labor provided by thousands of convicts and migrant workers.

The rotunda is a showcase of Texas history. The floor has a mosaic of all six flags that have ruled over Texas. Indigenous ...

Orchids and Food Trucks

Gourmet food trucks are all the rage these days. They are fun, novel and have really good food. Today we went to a food truck festival in Frisco. It was a foodie carnival with high and low cholesterol rides. If they have one nearby and you don't mind standing in lines definitely go.

Kolaches and Tears

Can tears wash away tragedy? Can prayer heal broken homes and hearts?
Too many times this week too many people are asking this question.

West, Texas. West, the Czech Stop. Everyone that drives 35 to Austin or Dallas knows West. It's where we stop and get kolaches. Wonderful square pastries filled with fruit. A town full of dueling bakeries each looking to entice travelers to come to their shop.

Lake Lewisville Birding

Finally, a nice day for the monthly bird walk.
Previously they had been very cold and overcast. Today was beautiful. Saw warblers, vireos, flycatcatchers, kinglets, herons, woodpeckers and an osprey.

Here are a few shots from the day. I like the white eyed vireo shot because it shows it's eye so well. They are easy to mix up with common yellow warblers.
