Military Christmas..Hope Not
Posted by: OGal, 4:30 PM GMT on July 29, 2011 +2

TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS,
HE LIVED ALL ALONE,
IN A ONE BEDROOM HOUSE MADE OF
PLASTER AND STONE.

I HAD COME DOWN THE CHIMNEY
WITH PRESENTS TO GIVE,
AND TO SEE JUST WHO
IN THIS HOME DID LIVE.

I LOOKED ALL ABOUT,
A STRANGE SIGHT I DID SEE,
NO TINSEL, NO PRESENTS,
NOT EVEN A TREE.

NO STOCKING BY MANTLE,
JUST BOOTS FILLED WITH SAND,
ON THE WALL HUNG PICTURES
OF FAR DISTANT LANDS.

WITH MEDALS AND BADGES,
AWARDS OF ALL KINDS,
A SOBER THOUGHT
CAME THROUGH MY MIND.

FOR THIS HOUSE WAS DIFFERENT,
IT WAS DARK AND DREARY,
I FOUND THE HOME OF A SOLDIER,
ONCE I COULD SEE CLEARLY.

THE SOLDIER LAY SLEEPING,
SILENT, ALONE,
CURLED UP ON THE FLOOR
IN THIS ONE BEDROOM HOME.

THE FACE WAS SO GENTLE,
THE ROOM IN SUCH DISORDER,
NOT HOW I PICTURED
A UNITED STATES SOLDIER.

WAS THIS THE HERO
OF WHOM I'D JUST READ?
CURLED UP ON A PONCHO,
THE FLOOR FOR A BED?

I REALIZED THE FAMILIES
THAT I SAW THIS NIGHT,
OWED THEIR LIVES TO THESE SOLDIERS
WHO WERE WILLING TO FIGHT.

SOON ROUND THE WORLD,
THE CHILDREN WOULD PLAY,
AND GROWNUPS WOULD CELEBRATE
A BRIGHT CHRISTMAS DAY.

THEY ALL ENJOYED FREEDOM
EACH MONTH OF THE YEAR,
BECAUSE OF THE SOLDIERS,
LIKE THE ONE LYING HERE.

I COULDN'T HELP WONDER
HOW MANY LAY ALONE,
ON A COLD CHRISTMAS EVE
IN A LAND FAR FROM HOME.

THE VERY THOUGHT
BROUGHT A TEAR TO MY EYE,
I DROPPED TO MY KNEES
AND STARTED TO CRY.

THE SOLDIER AWAKENED
AND I HEARD A ROUGH VOICE,
'SANTA DON'T CRY,
THIS LIFE IS MY CHOICE;

I FIGHT FOR FREEDOM,
I DON'T ASK FOR MORE,
MY LIFE IS MY GOD,
MY COUNTRY, MY CORPS.'

THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER
AND DRIFTED TO SLEEP,
I COULDN'T CONTROL IT,
I CONTINUED TO WEEP.

I KEPT WATCH FOR HOURS,
SO SILENT AND STILL
AND WE BOTH SHIVERED
FROM THE COLD NIGHT'S CHILL.

I DIDN'T WANT TO LEAVE
ON THAT COLD, DARK, NIGHT,
THIS GUARDIAN OF HONOR
SO WILLING TO FIGHT.

THEN THE SOLDIER ROLLED OVER,
WITH A VOICE SOFT AND PURE,
WHISPERED, 'CARRY ON SANTA,
IT'S CHRISTMAS DAY, ALL IS SECURE.'

ONE LOOK AT MY WATCH,
AND I KNEW HE WAS RIGHT.
'MERRY CHRISTMAS MY FRIEND,
AND TO ALL A GOOD NIGHT

Well started to check the batteries in stuff morning. We have two battery operated fans. The take eight D batteries each. One now has batteries and the other needs them. We have four battery powered lanterns. They all four now are loaded with batteries.

The weather guy just said we might start getting some rain on Wed so planning to start loading porch furniture into the garage tomorrow morning. It will be a tight squeeze but we have done it before. Just don't want to load all the stuff in the rain.

Need to get the set up of the portable air conditioner together. Also the gas cans for the generator need to be filled and the ice chest. We can wait until a little later to get this done.

Need to think a little more about food. Will do.......off for coffee!

Morning OGAL, from a wet and windy Bay of Fundy, see that you folks have trouble headed your way for the weekend. Models have it passing over the island after Irene has visited in the south. Cat 2 fairly substantial when she does make her way ashore, not good.
Our summer weather has been the opposite extreme from the south, fog, rain, and then some more.Soon to be a season change, hoping we can get some sun and clear weather from that for a few weeks.
Thanks for dropping by, and will be watching Irene's progress with you foks in mind.

Blue, I am hoping against hope that this storm pulls further off the coast. I know you must be concerned. I just don't know what we will be faced wtih. Yep I have plenty of extra batteries for everything. I just don't want to have to deal with another Charley mess. I think if that happens we are out of here.

OK someone just has to clarify for me all these models I am looking at and the one you are looking at. Remember, this is coming from someone who can tell you what the numbers on a Richter scale mean, but not what computer models for hurricanes mean.

One shows this beast hitting Florida straight on, another veering off to the east. Which one are you following?

karen the models moving off the coast of Florida are a good thing. Most models take the storm off the fL coast but two still remain on FL. The line in the middle of the models means that is where the NHC thinks the storm will travel but the cone is 250 miles on either side of that middle line. What the NHC is saying is they could miss the track 250 miles on either side. Now at a Cat 3 this will be a critical storm and it looks like land fall may be up in SC or NC. This all could change as it did with Charley. We just need to watch, listen, get ready and wait.

Ugh! I'm getting as nervous as you guys. This is the first real threat to Florida since I have been a member of WU. I remember when Shores evacuated...but never you guys. Now I'm worried!

Karen I don't plan to evacuate. We are 40 miles inland. I think we will be ok with sone tropical storm winds and gusts. Most likely just lots of rain. We got flood insurance through FEMA held by USAA. If the dry lake bed behind our house would flood we will be covered.

OGal, just coming by to check on my WU friends who might be in the area of Irene - she has grown in strength and size over night - not good!

Have you all your garden furniture in the garage? What a farce, but I suppose living where you do, you are always prepared.

Take care - thinking of you all as the week goes on. Poor Bug is right in the middle of landfall at the moment, praying it moves off the coast!

I love that title, too! It's looking a little better for you this a.m. As you say, if it'll scoot offshore a bit more you'll be more or less set. I don't worry so much about TS winds, or even up to Cat 1, maybe 2. It's been water that's really done us in from past storms - TS Allison and Ike.

Well, I've said it a thousand times - all these people who are screaming "Get prepared NOW!" need to get their minds right. The time to prepare is at the start of the season.

Anyhow, we'll all be watching and waiting right along with you. Even CRS sounded a little apprehensive on the main last night - Turks and Caicos are going to take a pounding today, with all of the Bahamas. Not much high ground to run to out there.

Mornin Aqua and Shore. I too feel better. Infact a huge weight lifted. Shore you are so right. Preps need to be made early but some things have to wait until the last minute.

Aqua my heart aches for Bug but I don't think she will be directly hit. I honestly feel that Irene will graze the Carolinas and go on to do more damage to the New England coast. Who knows.......it is the waitin and watchin that kills ya.

Shore I know you need rain. You will get it sooner or later. I don't want any storm to hit you the rain would come down much too quickly. I just want you to get some nice summer showers.

Wow, this looks like it's going to be a tough storm. glad it's (hopefully) will continue to miss Florida.
I can lecture my Mom until I'm blue in the face about getting supplies a few days before hand but she nevers listens.
My sister is the same way. As long as her and hubby have lot's of ammo to shoot looters they think they will be fine. Water, batteries etc aren't a priority.
Pretty sure I was switched with another child at the hospital after my birth. lol.
Mom's in Orlando and Sis is in Tampa.

Anyhow, hope the residual winds and water are kind to you all.

Karen I think this storm will make another move toward the Atlantic. I don't think Beth will have a problem. It will be a very weak storm if she does get it. Cape Cod has had storms for many years. They know what to do.

Don't worry. Hope your mom did well and that Randy made it through his long dental appointment. How is your toe??

Shoot, all we've got here in TX is a whole lot of boring hot'n'dry. The only thing Doc Masters can find to post about us is a dead fish on a dry lakebed. LOL

Don't worry. Hope your mom did well and that Randy made it through his long dental appointment. How is your toe??

Mom has her surgery tomorrow morning. Randy was at the dentist for 3 1/2 hours! They had to cut through an old bridge to remove it, then give him a root canal. Then they did some deep cleaning. Now he has a temporary bridge on. He tolerates pain well, just like me. They told him to take Tylenol if he needs it. So far he hasn't needed anything. We rode our bikes down to Main St. so he could have a smoothie, as chewing is out of the question, at least tonight. They said he will definitely feel this - they were just in his mouth for so long.

My toe is fine. I will just go along all day and it feels just fine, then I walk on it a certain way and feel it again. Right now I have my pinky (right) toe tapped to the toe next to it. I know if I went to the DR. that is all they would do. Just when I feel I can take it off, I get that twinge so I keep it on. I'll take it off tomorrow night or Thursday AM. We're heading down to the concert tomorrow night and I generally take my shoes off when I sit down. Having it tapped just brings my awareness level up. By Friday I'll be back at work and wearing sandals to work - so it'll be protected that way.

I still have a funny feeling in my tummy even though it looks like Irene will stay east of us. All it takes is for that storm to run into something unexpected for her to travel more to the west and not make a northerly turn so quickly. Believe me I think I will stay on alert just a little longer. I can move the rest of my things very quickly. I don't want to be caught in an awful situation if I could have something differently.
This time for us is horrible. I wanted to write the S--c-s word. So much waiting and waiting.

It is amazing that even Rob on Grand Manan may get a visit from Irene. Our East Coast is at risk. What a horrible weekend for our SC and NC firends..

I HATE YOU IRENE! IF YOU HIT THE US IN A BAD WAY WE ARE DOING AWAY WITH THE LETTER " I " YOU AND IKE WILL HAVE BEEN ENOUGH FOR ALL OF US!!!!!!!

Good Morning Neighbor!
I'm still a little bit unsettled about the storm. Wish she would start the NE turn sometime in the next ten min's. I live on lake Brantley so I'm a bit woried about water backing up. Our dock was supposed to have some small repairs this week but those big tuff guys want to put it off. Hang in there girl!

Hi there HH. As I said I just have this funny feeling. Hope it is just a mistake. Hope all is well to the West where you are. Stay in touch. Looks like the Carolinas, New York and New Jersey are going to be entertaining Irene. Not a fun thought for them. Hope Irene does not become a Cat 4.

HH do you have flood insurance? We back up to a dry lake bed. After Fay we got flood insurance through FEMA being held by USAA. It makes me feel better even if we never need it.

Are you on Facebook??

How amazing to see the Cat 4 hurricane color. I hate it. Thank goodness it is only gonna be a Cat 4 for a short time. The Cat 3 status of Irene is bad enought. Everyone in SC and NC keep your eyes on this girl. She is not gonna be pleasant company for you.

Just looking at intensity models. Looks good that the northeast is only going to be hit by tropical storm winds. Not that is good but sure better than a Cat 2 hurricane.

We here have not seen any of Irene yet. I think her rain bands will start to come in tonight and tomorrow. I am just so thankful I will not get a direct hit. We have lots of the H season to come so I will just watch and wait and keep my fingers crossed.

As Gams said this morning she could smell Irene. That is so true. The salty, fishy smell is there when you are near to a strong storm.

I Have been lurking in the background whenever I had a spare moment... watching this big brute Irene move ever closer! You will be relieved when she has moved passed northern Florida, but I do hope the building low pushes her back out to sea, as hitting that east coast will not be a good move....:(
Take care - fingers crossed!

Irene is providing us with awesome rain bands. They bring strong wind and heavy rain and in five minutes they are gone and have moved on somewhere else. At this point we have had a half an inch of rain. More rain will be coming in tonight and tomorrow morning. Such a wonderful gift the rain is. Still this is a scary storm and what she will take to the Carolinas is not going to be a good thing. I know we are at the mercy of these storms so the state of Florida may be next. Fingers crossed that we aren't.

I was wondering when somebody would reference that song.
Good choice there with Clapton!
Someday soon we will sing it for a good reason but for now I can sympathize with those waiting and not knowing how bad it will be. I can not imagine the feelings of the folks in the evacuation zone: waiting and knowing.

Had a strong band off Irene come through early am. Woke me up. It was a quick .09 inches of rain and was gone. Lots of wind. I feel like someone has drained my blood. I just can't worry any more about all my friends. It is totally doing me in. I just have to hope my friends in New York city are listening and paying attention. This storm will be a nightmare for them. You can only tell people how to get ready to meet a storm this strong but it is their choice to prepare. I think we will be away from this storm later this afternoon. So far Irene has torn up our east coast beaches and removed turtle eggs but that is about all. My ♥ is with all those involved in this horrible disaster.

Good morning, OGal, about all you can do is pray for these people to get some common sense, and if they don't get any, pray to God to protect them. Hopefully, Irene will teach them a lesson without putting them in harms' way.

I guess a storm band hitting someone who's been through a hurricane would be scary, especially in the middle of the night.

Take care!

Good Morning,
Cloudy and calm here in Wilmington NC... 80 deg with a press of 29.84 in.
Radar is showing rain about 100 miles South.
Forecast track is about 40 or 50 miles off shore... about over the Gulfstream... it seems like these "canes like to follow the hot water of the stream.

Needed to pull my blog out of the basement. It has been a day of watching Irene and listening to all that is going on. I think the states to the north of the Carolinas may have been hit the hardest. May just have to wait and see.

Well back to the channels all..MSNBC, CNN and TWC

I just love the instant conversaions you can have on FB. I think I am really spoiled.

Life goes on post Irene. Lots of flooding in the New England states. This storm may end up being very expensive. Glad so far all our Wuba folks made it through the storm ok. Our eyes now switch to the Eastern Atlantic where Katia will soon be born. Oh November wish you were here.

Afternoon from the windy Bay of Fundy, great fall like afternoon, wind beginning to give some relief, switched to the west keeping the clouds clear, quite pleasant for sure.
Your map showing lots of activity further east in the Atlantic, no doubt some of that will be trouble for some of us within the next little while.
The folks inland certainly took a hit, not from the wind, but rain. Areas withiin forty miltes of where we are had a miserable overnight, not so for us, I am certain our turn will come along.
As you mentioned good to hear of the folks we keep track of come through with no problems.
Keep an eye to the east .

Oops guess I didn't post on my blog this morning. We are having a nice afternoon shower. I spent the day trimming bushes, watching tennis and doing laundry. Kind of a nice day. Hubby was gone all day. Fun for him and great for me. I think when we are both around we feel like we need to talk to each other. He is doing alot of consulting now which is good for both of us. He is out with his peeps and I can go out with my peeps.. Win, win for both of us. Hope y'all have had a terrific Tuesday.

I heard on the news this morning that the UK has had the COLDEST summer for over 20 years..... Texas has kept all our heat!! lol

Out for dinner today with my friend. This is the friend who I drive north and she drives south, and we meet in the middle. It is a hotel, so we can sit and chat and eat and drink all afternoon! Looking forward to it!
