With a system swirling offshore of the southeast U.S. and trying to become the first official numbered tropical depression or named tropical storm of the year in the Atlantic, even if it doesn't it reminds us that we're in hurricane season, and here is some basic, fundamental terminology related to tropical cyclones.

I just searched for "polar vortex" and got about 17,000,000 results. Apparently the number doesn't display when specifying a date range; I wonder how many would have come up if I had searched a week ago! And searching for "polar vortex" "global warming" gives 78,300,000.
Looking at those topics in relation to the recent cold weather over parts of the U.S. and Canada from an objective, scientific perspective ...

My 8th annual edition. For 2013, they just happened to work out to be an even Top 20, presented in the chronological order in which they occurred, not ranked except for my choice for the "image of the year" at the end.

So much to blog about recently (derechos, meteotsunamis, hurricane season outlooks), so little time!
But how could I not do this one? :)
I posted an entry on May 23, 2009 titled "Did a tropical storm make landfall today?" and, on October 10, 2011, "Did a tropical storm hit Florida Sunday night?"
Now what happened last weekend. If it looks, walks and quacks like... at least a tropical depression not far from tropical storm streng...
