Weather Summary

Weather Underground Forecast for Sunday, July 20, 2008.

Low pressure continues to hover over Mexico on Sunday. Thus, scattered showers and thunderstorms will persist along eastern Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. The trough will extend into Honduras and Nicaragua, so showers and thunderstorms are also likely to occur in much of Central America. Expect a tropical wave producing moderate to heavy rainfall to move from Cuba towards the Yucatan Peninsula later on Sunday evening. This tropical wave has high potential for tropical cyclone formation. Another tropical wave over the Lesser Antilles will produce few scattered showers on Sunday. The tropical wave will extend into northern South America and is expected to bring moderate to heavy rainfall to Venezuela. Tropical storm Bertha remains to the northeast over the Mid-Atlantic.

Off the west coast of Mexico, Tropical Storm Elida will continue moving westward away from land. Also, Tropical Storm Fautso has strengthened to a category 1 Hurricane and will likely increase to category 2 by Sunday. However, this system is also expected to move westward, and will not be a threat to land.

To the south, a low pressure system will approach central Chile on Sunday and kick up some precipitation. The system's trough will extend across Argentina and spread a few scattered showers over the southern tip of the continent. Cool temperatures will persist over the region.

To the north, a warm front extending over Paraguay and southern Brazil will produce scattered showers on Sunday. Showers are expected to move into northern Argentina Sunday evening. Temperatures will slightly increase as the front moves southward.

Hello, Dolly; so long, Bertha; Christobal keeps on chugging along

Dr. Jeff Masters

Tropical Storm Christobal continues to chug along the coast of North Carolina, dropping welcome rains over the eastern portion of the state. Morehead City radar shows a well-organized storm with plenty of spiral bands of thunderstorms. These bands have only moderate amounts of rainfall, which is fortunate, since Christobal is moving so slowly. Rainfall amounts from Christobal have generally been below two inches over eastern North Carolina, with one isolated pocket o...

Weather History:

Did you know that...

While not necessarily specific to this date, an interesting statistic occurred from May 30th to the beginning of fall in 1588. During this time period, the sea claimed 50 ships of the Spanish Armada, killing 4,000 men. The sea claimed more Spanish ships than the English did during that time period.
